we made it and survived! it was so cold up at mt. st. helens.. we saw some deer grazing.. a little one possibly a new spring baby? wish i'd been able to get a pic of that.. well here's the volcano.. i don't think the picture does it justice though because it's so huge and off the scale.. it's surrounded still by scorched earth and dead trees all blown down for miles.. and the 'dome' in the center of the crater in the top is rising every day.. it's a really cool thing to see.. ghost p.s. does anyone else see what looks like a giant sci-fi tarantula crawling towards my camera at the bottom/center of this picture?!! hehe..

thanks for the compliments on the pic, pete! yeah, i took this one, although bdhp's usually the photographer.. i'm afraid this one is not as hi-res as the version i have due to imageshack's limits.. as it turns out we are lucky to have gone up there when we did.. this shot was taken at johnson's ridge.. (people of course died there when the eruption occurred..) and they are closing it to the public very soon.. so pix this close aren't going to be so easy to get anymore.. i have pix of mt. st. helens pre-eruption too.. that my mom passed on to me.. from back when it had a top on it! never know how it will look the next time.. could erupt and change any time... ghost

hehe.. the tarantula i think is a tree trunk.. all that remains all around are gnarled tree trunks in weird shapes.. i think we must've been about a mile away.. there's an observatory at johnson ridge (johnson was killed in the eruption..) that is closing down.. here's a shot that gives you an idea how close it really is.. ghost

yeah.. it looks miles different.. actually in the first shot i hiked a ways off to see spirit lake off in the distance, so i got a good pic of the volcano from one angle.. then bdhp took the second one as we left.. as we walked back from the ridge.. somehow he got such incredible focus on the mountaintop that it looks right there! it's really like a mile off.. but there's no way to fit the scope of it into a picture really.. i tried by zooming out to catch the whole scene.. it's a cool place..
