good a.m. hey pete.. elliott smith was an indie songwriter from dallas originally who moved here to portland when he was 14 where he wrote and recorded his first album in an attic loft in one of the houses he was living in at the time.. he would have probably remained obscure except that his song 'miss misery' was nominated for an oscar for the theme to that movie 'good will hunting' .. i never really cared about that movie, but when he sang the song at the oscars i went out and bought his cds.. the rest was history.. he is in fact one of the few people i will call genius.. he plays piano, guitar and drums, writes heartwrenching raw yet sophisticated lyrics and has such a haunting voice.. he died by suicide 4 years ago after a long hard battle with alcohol and other drugs.. anyway, here's a bit of him at the piano.. but alot of his guitar stuff has a folk sound to it, and he often has an old fashioned saloon style sounding upright piano accompanying him.. i'm obsessed with him, i'm afraid.. he was a great comfort to the sad and lonely and could say so well what so many of us could not.. about self-doubt, grief, self-contempt and depression and the lure of drugs to numb the pain.. ghost p.s. i found this: it's a much better example of his usual guitar style song.. enjoy! of course there's samples of all of his songs over at my blog and he's often playing on the mp3 player there..
